The opening two minutes from Eric Ball’s "Sunset
Rhapsody". While the main opening theme is very simple,
the piece demands a sensitive and lyrical approach from both band
and conductor.
This is a live recording of Hatfields winning
performance at the Section 2 National finals
This is a short clip of the Tranquilo in Philip Sparke’s
"A London Overture". Featured is Trevor
Kendal on Solo Cornet and Simon
Brookes on solo Euphonium. The band performed "A
London Overture" at the Pontin’s Contest in 2004 and were
awarded 6th place. As no recording was taken at
the contest itself, this is a recording from a few days
prior.
This is a live excerpt from Hatfield’s performance of Herbert Howell’s
"Pageantry" at the National finals (first section)
2005. Although the band were disappointed to be awarded
6th place at this contest this performance does
demonstrate real development in the bands sound since Dundee 2003.
The main feature of this excerpt is the opening "Fanfare
motif" from the Cornet section.
"Dancing Elves" An interesting 1 minute excerpt From
Rodney Newton’s "The King of Elflands Daughter"
Based on Lord Dunsany’s classic novel of a
marriage between an Elf and a Mortal. The Band were awarded
5th place at Harrogate in 2004. This is one of the more
difficult pieces the band has performed on the contest
stage.
This is the reprise from John Ireland’s "Comedy
Overture" (famous for its ‘picadilly cornet’ theme)
Featured is Some "Impish baritone playing" from our Solo Baritone
Peter Jones. Hatfield’s Baritones were some of the
best on the day during this winning performance from the Yorkshire
area Contest 2005.
"Ballet For Band" by Joseph
Horovitz. This recording of the band was taken the night
before the Butlins Contest 2005. Unfortunately there were no
recording facilities at the venue itself and you can clearly hear
our musical director Graham O’Connor shouting at
the band at the start. The Bass duet is played by Andy
Garbutt and Rob Browne. the Solo
Euphonium is played by John Smith. Hatfield were
winners the following day.
